The cottage from The Holiday a closer look

However, Columbia Pictures did provide set shots where you can see the cottage in more detail. “It was a real tourist attraction while it was there.” Despite the fact that it was in a remote area, many people went to see it each day. Anyone who has seen ‘The Holiday’ will undoubtedly recognize the English cottage that prominently features in the movie.

Iris and Amanda’s houses in ‘The Holiday’ and where to find them

So today let’s take a look at how they built it for the movie and managed to make it look like it had been there forever. Honeysuckle Cottage, in the London commuter village of Holmbury St Mary, inspired Iris' home in the movie. The crew based the specially-designed set for Rosehill Cottage on the three-bedroom period property, recreating it brick for brick at a studio in London. For those who haven’t seen the movie, the story follows two women having guy-trouble who swap homes in each other’s countries. One of those homes is Rosehill Cottage, a beautiful property located in the English countryside.

Rosehill Cottage: A Look Inside the Cottage from the Film, The Holiday

Rosehill Cottage is the backdrop for a number of scenes throughout the movie. Mainly those featuring Cameron Diaz as Amanda Woods, the American staying in England. This house appears to be built of stone/rock, doesn’t it? It looks so much larger in this professional shot than it did in the movie!

Notice how the mismatched furniture makes the room feel real and adds so much personality. The White Horse, Graham’s preferred watering hole and place where he reunites with Amanda after thinking she had gone back to LA, is a very real country pub also located in the village of Shere. The scenes around Rosehill cottage were filmed in some of the most photographed villages in Surrey, England, including Godalming and Shere. For anyone taking notes, that’s nowhere near the home used for Amanda’s house but hey, movie magic! The 22-room home which was owned for 40 years by the late comedienne Phyllis Dillier, was chosen for its ‘Old Hollywood’ vibe.

While in the cab, leaving for the airport, Amanda realizes she loves Graham, so she runs back to the house, where she recently left Graham, and hugs him. Though there’s now a bank in its place, the video store where Iris and Miles browse the shelves to find movies on Arthur’s list was once a real Blockbuster video located in Brentwood, LA. Arthur’s property is located on Rockingham Avenue in Brentwood California. The property used for exterior shots is called The Mill House and it stands overlooking the River Wey in Tilford, Surrey. It has five bedrooms, a drawing-room, a family room, a breakfast room, a cloakroom, a study, and more.

And the unique architectural details and exquisite exterior make a little more sense after learning that the house was previously home to lauded architect Wallace Neff — who designed and built it for himself and his family. Worth well over $10 million, the 10,324-square-foot mansion made famous by the 2006 movie has an impressive total of 7 bedrooms and 7 baths. If you too have fallen head over heels for Amanda’s gorgeous Tuscan-style home in Los Angeles, you’ll be happy to hear that it’s an actual home and not the product of some clever studio set with CGI slapped on top of it. A few of these photos are set stills and promotional images courtesy Columbia Pictures. The rest are screenshots I took while watching the movie with special features on the DVD (affiliate link). “It was a real tourist attraction while it was there.” Despite the fact that it was in a remote area, hundreds of people went to see it each day.

If you've caught the bug, scroll down to see how you can incorporate some of the atmosphere from the cottage from The Holiday into your own house. The cottage from The Holiday has become a phenomenon, summing up the best of the English cottage look and creating a dream of Christmas in the countryside for thousands. All the features are there including wooden beams, an open fire, the slightly shabby country kitchen of our dreams, faded chintzes and that tiny, beautiful roll-top bath. Cottages come into their own in winter, and seeing first Kate Winslet and then Cameron Diaz occupying the space in their inimitable style certainly adds something to its desirability. The seven-bedroom, six-bath home is located at 1883 Orlando Road in San Marino.

Inside Rosehill Cottage on “The Holiday” Set:

Back at Iris’s house… This hallway from the kitchen leads to a room we see very little of in the movie. At first, the swap seems uneven; Iris revels in the luxury of Amanda’s L.A. Home, while Amanda suffers a series of disappointments in Surrey. Things turn around for Amanda when she meets Iris’ brother Graham (Jude Law). Both Amanda and Graham intend to have a one-night stand, but a romance develops. Things get complicated as only one day remains until Amanda’s flight is scheduled to leave to L.A.

This idyllic 300-year-old property is so reminiscent of Honeysuckle Cottage that previous guests have raved about their Holiday-inspired stays here. Equally popular are the country walks taken from the front door, with plenty of cosy pubs and restaurants to try, and the stunning views over the Derbyshire Dales and historic town of Wirksworth. A secluded, sunny garden and log burner inside make this a treat at any time of year. Many of the character features Iris fell for can be found at Honeysuckle Cottage. There's a cosy inglenook fireplace with Jotul log burner in the lounge, exposed timbers and oak joinery throughout, exposed brickwork in the bedrooms and leaded light windows. The quintessentially English cottage in Surrey that inspired Christmas classic, The Holiday, was once a real-life holiday home available to rent on Airbnb.

Just like the cottage in The Holiday, this 16th-century property is located in the heart of the Surrey Hills in Holmbury St Mary. It features a lovely private garden and interiors that will make any city dweller want to move to the country – there's a cosy AGA, pretty farmhouse-style tiling and even a log burner in the master bedroom. An additional twin room makes it suitable for family getaways, too.

So we took things a step further and tracked down a few of the other memorable The Holiday filming locations — including an architectural gem designed by lauded architect Richard Neutra that may have caught your eye. While Rosehill Cottage might not be real, the humble little brick house that it was based on does exist — and recently got some new owners who weren’t aware of its enduring popularity before moving in. Amazingly, it took production just a couple of weeks to construct and a total of four weeks to fully landscape and make sure the house and its surrounding area looked genuinely like a 200-year-old property. Sorry to be the bearer of genuinely bad news but Rosehill Cottage doesn’t exist. From the impressive open-plan kitchen and chic, yet cozy living area to the state-of-the-art gym and impressive gated driveway landscaped to perfection, Amanda’s house is pretty much the perfect getaway home. However, despite the recognizable exterior, if you look at photos from inside the house, you’ll notice that these aren’t the super-posh, modern interiors we see in the movie.
